Important news about HackSpace

We have some important news to share about HackSpace: Issue 81 was the last issue of HackSpace as a standalone magazine, and HackSpace has become part of The MagPi, the official Raspberry Pi magazine. Starting with issue 145, We’ll be adding pages to The MagPi to make room for the stories and tutorials you’ve come to expect from HackSpace.

Solar BEAM Marble Machine

By Andrew Gregory. Posted

We love brass here at HackSpace towers. It’s conductive, it looks great, and you can get a circuit working with it reasonably quickly, as long as you don’t expect it to look perfect.

Jack Spiggle, aka NanoRobotGeek, has used brass not just in the electrical parts, but also in the mechanical parts of his Solar BEAM Marble Machine. There’s a lot to it, so we’d highly recommend checking out the link but, in short, it takes in energy from the solar panel and stores it in a pair of
capacitors; when the charge gets too much to store, the capacitors release it into the rest of the circuit, where it powers a solenoid that pushes a lever that moves a marble around a track. Brilliant.
