Carving Leaf Bowls

By Poppy Mosbacher. Posted

These beautiful bowls have been carved by Simon Beggs, a 22 year old wood turner from Sydney. They were roughly cut to shape with a bandsaw and then carved using an angle grinder. The intricate stem “is the hardest part”, says Simon, and was achieved by using a rotary tool. After a lot of sanding to make the surfaces smooth, the bowls were polished with 3 coats of lacquer.

If you’d like to make your own bowl, Simon suggests choosing a leaf for inspiration that is unsymmetrical, “look for one with some width and a little bit of interest in the shape.”

Instructions are available here.

Safety Note: Woodworking can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Make sure you understand, and properly mitigate, the risks before starting.
